“Help for Nepal to build National Innovation Centre” Charity Dinner is organized by The Hong Kong-Nepalese Business Association with the support of Federation of Handicraft Association of Nepal and Nepal Airlines.
In 2012, Dr. Pun led the initiative to register a nonprofit named National Innovation Center. The vision of the National Innovation Center is to attract & retain talented and creative Nepalese and use their talents for the economic development of Nepal through Research and Development.
One of the main reasons why Nepal is economically a least developed country is because there is not much happening for economic development. Nepal imports over 90% of its products for different purposes, and exports less than 10% of its products for foreign currency, causing a huge trade deficit. As a result, many talented, innovative and creative Nepalese are leaving the country every year in search of better careers and opportunities abroad.
Objective
- To create a conducive environment and persuade talented Nepali researchers and scientists currently working abroad to return to Nepal.
- To foster research and developments for the economic development of Nepal.
- To focus on the development of science and technology in Nepal by nurturing the talents and creativity of Nepalese.
- To build a 10 to 15MW hydropower station and the power generated will be sold to the government to sustain the Center.
Dr. Mahabir Pun
Dr. Pun is a Nepalese teacher, social entrepreneur and an activist known for his extensive work in applying wireless technologies to develop remote areas of the Himalayas, also known as the Nepal Wireless Networking Project.
His work on distance learning and online educational services constitutes the first attempt in Nepal to address the scarcity of qualified teachers through technology. He took steps to ensure the success and growth of his projects, by arranging for other teachers to attend a computer training course in Pokhara, starting economic projects to fund students’ expenses and teachers’ salaries, and by attracting hundreds of international volunteers with wide-ranging skills. He has since built a new cultural center, and has developed communication links for yak farmers, as well as new ventures to international trekking and tour groups. He has therefore succeeded not just in creating a self-sustaining educational system, but also a range of new economic and social enterprises to support remote communities
In 2004, Dr. Pun received the Overall Social Innovations Award from the Global Ideas Bank and in 2007, Dr. Pun was awarded the Magsaysay Award, considered by some to be the Nobel Prize of Asia, in recognition of “his innovative application of wireless computer technology in Nepal, bringing progress to remote mountain areas by connecting his village to the global village”. Dr. Pun is one of four Nepalis to receive the Magsaysay Award, and the only one to receive the Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership.
